Flash Back Friday: My First Car

On Facebook and Instagram I see people posting pictures for “Throw Back Thursday” or “Flash Back Friday”.  I have posted a few pictures here and there and as I was digging up pictures to post from back in the day and I found a few pictures of my first car.

Before I share a picture of my first car, I figure a little background is in order.  I grew up in Plano, Texas and the schools at the time were known to have some fairly wealthy kids attending them.  Our parking lots were typically full of brand new Mercedes, BMW’s, Mustangs and my favorite was the Mitsubishi Eclipse!

When I turned 16, I had these big dreams of turning the corner to our driveway and seeing a car of my dreams with a huge bow on it waiting for me.  I spent a lot of time scouring magazines and cutting out pictures of cars that I would love to have and posting them our refrigerator in the kitchen.  In the days leading up to the big day turning 16, I’d point to the pictures and often hear my folks say things like “dream on” or “we can’t afford it”.  This made no sense to me as I was attending school with all the other kids with their hot to trot cars!  I thought I would make things easy and post print outs from Westralian Auto Finance (WAF) or other banks of where we could get easy car loans.

So, the day was finally here.  I was turning 16 and we went out to dinner and the whole time I was thinking how I would react when I saw the car in my driveway with that big bow.  I was envisioning a Saturn which was cool at the time or my dream car, the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Should I begin to cry with tears of joy or show a look of shock and collapse with excitement?  So many options of how to look surprised!

Well, we turned the corner and there was no car. {Insert sad face of a newly 16 year old girl}.  Instead I got to occasionally drive my Dad’s Ford Explorer.  Then…. late in my Junior year of high-school, after coming to grips with the fact that I was not getting that dream car, I was surprised by a Ford Taurus from my parents.  It wasn’t my dream car but I finally had a car of my own!  Here is my first car.  Notice in the left picture, the headlight on one side is already broken (first of many fender benders) and the picture on the right is yet another fender bender.  Oops!
This was a good experience to teach me to not buy my kids brand new cars!  I might however add the big bow for their future cars!  What was your first car?

So considering the amount of fender benders you tend to have, maybe your parents were right to not get you a new car at 16... ;o)

My first car was a cherry red Mitsubishi Eclipse. It was gorgeous! I got it in 2000, and the car was a 1993, but I didn't care that it was outdated. I loved that car. She was a beauty!

haha... I was like you wanting an Eclipse! I didn't get one either. I started out though with a Ford Ranger which was A-OK by me :). So cool they got you a car though!! And yeah, getting kiddo's brand new vehicles, not a wise choice.
